About This Print

Pompeys Pillar National Monument preserves a towering sandstone butte rising above the Yellowstone River in south-central Montana. Designated a national monument in 2001, the site is best known for the signature left by William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1806—the only remaining visible physical evidence of the expedition found along its route. For centuries before Clark’s visit, the pillar held cultural significance for Indigenous peoples and served as a landmark for travelers crossing the Northern Plains.

This vintage-inspired Pompeys Pillar National Monument print celebrates the rich history and sweeping landscapes of Montana’s Yellowstone Valley. Created in the spirit of classic WPA-era artwork, it captures the character of the monument’s distinctive sandstone formation and its enduring role in the story of exploration in the American West. A perfect piece for history enthusiasts, travelers, Lewis and Clark admirers, and anyone inspired by the landscapes of the Northern Plains.
