Rose Island Lighthouse stands on Rose Island at the entrance to Newport Harbor in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Completed in 1870, the granite lighthouse was built to guide vessels navigating the busy harbor approaches and the shipping routes that connected Newport with ports throughout New England. Surrounded by open water and commanding views of Newport Harbor, the East Passage, and the Newport Bridge, the lighthouse occupies a strategic location in one of the nation's most historic sailing centers.
